TERRAIN

LANDSCAPE

This collection comprises landscapes undertaken in a variety of modes, styles and approaches. The most recent series of works are inspired by the Romantic landscapes and expressionistic studies of JMW Turner, the 19th century Tonalism movement, and the ‘Nocturnes’ of James McNeill Whistler. The works depict the elemental atmospheric condition of early evening, sometimes referred as ‘The Gloaming’. A literary term synonymous with dusk; those fleeting moments comprising the darkest part of twilight, as the final shards of light fade into darkness. These brief moments are characterised by rich, shimmering colours glowing over the water through the dwindling flecks of daylight, before slipping into the night.
